Gas-bentonite interactions: Towards a better understanding of gas dynamics in Engineered Barrier Systems

نویسندگان

چکیده

Bentonite is a common backfill material used in Engineered Barrier Systems (EBS) for radioactive waste disposal. Its thermal, hydraulic, and chemical properties have been extensively studied. However, empirical evidence on the interactions with free gas phase present its pore space under conditions close to those prevailing deep geological repositories (i.e., exposure multiple species at temperature humidity of freshly backfilled EBS) scarce. This limits prediction/assessment evolution composition EBS. Here we outcome laboratory experiments targeting such gas-bentonite using two different types bentonite (Italian bentonite; Wyoming bentonite) being exposed atmospheric air sealed stainless-steel vessels. The results indicate that sorption can occur repository-like likely play significant role overall dynamics Drying both bentonites was shown partly re-activate their CO2 capacity during subsequent re-hydration phase. Furthermore, grinding resulted generation new pyrite surfaces significantly enhanced O2 removal from by oxidation. Our initial investigations call more systematic extensive series order quantitatively constrain processes involved interactions.

Global Wave Interactions in Isentropic Gas Dynamics

We give a complete description of nonlinear waves and their pairwise interactions in isentropic gas dynamics. Our analysis includes rarefactions, compressions and shock waves. Because the waves are arbitrarily large, we describe the change of states across the wave exactly, without resolving the characteristic patterns. We similarly describe the states between nonlinear waves in any pairwise in...

I-34: NRY Haplotype Analysis: towards A Better Understanding of The Genetic Basis of Spermatogenic Failure

It has been established that the Y chromosome carries genes required for spermatogenesis and male fertility. For many decades worldwide screening for gene identification has been conducted in research laboratories. However, it has been a difficult process in identifying such genes (i.e. causative mutations) which could explain the phenotypic variation and could be potentially used as markers fo...

Fundamental understanding of goaf gas displacement in longwall goaf

Fundamental understanding of the goaf gas distribution in a gassy coal mine is necessary for developing effective goaf gas drainage strategies in the longwall coal mine. The goaf gas was subjected to the surface and body forces that were classified depending upon whether they acted on the surface area or the volume of the gas element. Of these forces, the body forces were more predominant in di...

A Numerical Study of the Sour Gas Reforming in a Dielectric Barrier Discharge Reactor

In this paper, using a one-dimensional simulation model, the reforming process of sour gas, i.e. CH4, CO2, and H2S, to the various charged particles and syngas in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor is studied. An electric field is applied across the reactor radius, and thus a non-thermal plasma discharge is formed within the reactor. Based on the space...
